Lawn mowing can be fun : American Lawn Mower 1815-18 18-Inch Reel Mower

I admit that I was a heavy user of those noisy and stinky gas machines, until recently when the self-propel feature went kaputt half way through the job. I found myself pushing a 6HP B&S mower in 90+ degree heat. The phrase "walk behind mower" suddenly had real meaning. The very next weekend I went to a local garden store and purchased the 18in American Lawn Mower (at a lower price than my favorite web retailer). Setup was very easy except for those darn e-clips. It was fortunate that the manufacturer included an extra e-clip because I mangled the first one. I opted to leave the foam grip off. The material seems like it would deteriorate in a few months anyway, but if you have delicate hands it's a must. This was my first reel mower. I found it to be very manueverable, plenty of height adjustments, excellent clean cut (bermuda) and very little clumping of grass. The 18in reel allowed for speedy cutting of my 1/3 acre lot. Plus I got the added bonus of a great cardiovascular workout; no need for that health club membership! Although I would not recommend a push reel mower for hilly yards. I would also consider the Great States 2000 20" reel mower also available at Amazon.

Great Mower - Lightweight & Joy to Use : Easun NaturCut Ideal 40 16-Inch 5-Blade Push Reel Lawn Mower

After I just could not push my old and very heavy, and probably blunt) handmower.... Man! that thing was so darn heavy I would have to stop many times to catch my breath again..!), I did some research and ended up ordering this Easun mower. Easy to assemble, I had to wait till the winter rains were over here in Oregon to try it. The first time I got to it the grass was uneven after almost 6 months no mowing. It was really fairly easy to get through the thick grass. The second time was much better because the grass was now all the same length. The third time and each mowing after it was very easy indeed. I am SO GLAD I bought this thing because now I just lightly push it over my lawns, sloping front lawn and within half an hour the whole job is done, looking nice. Now I just go over the lawn each ten days or so whenever we have some sun and the lawn looks better each time. BUY IT and you won't be sorry. Oh one more thing: The rotor cutting blades do NOT touch the cutting bar as in my older mower. There is a fraction of space between the two and therefor this mower does not to be sharpened for about ten years they say. I can see why.

Everyone and their mother will tell you that you can't cut tall grass with one of these things, but they don't know what they're talking about. What they really mean to say is that you can't cut tall grass easily or quickly, but you can do it if you raise the bar to its highest setting and adopt a mowing style similar to vacuuming. You'll probably be worn out before you're even halfway done, but it'll work.

The instructions are terrible and so are the little thumb screws they give you to assemble the handle, but I love everything else about this mower. It's heavy enough to plow over the thick spots without jumping off the ground too often and its blades make a very satisfying sound. I have some concerns regarding the longevity of the plastic roller bars, but they let you order replacements, so I'm not too worried. The satisfaction of getting to fire my landlord's gardener and keep the money I was paying him to do absolutely nothing every month makes it all worth it.

Do yourself a favor and pitch the little plastic wing nuts they give you to secure the carriage bolts in place--they hurt your hands and work loose with vibration all the time. Pick up some 6mm locking nuts and impact drive them on instead.

Less Functionality for Much More Money : Brill 78371 Razorcut 38 15-Inch Reel Push Lawn Mower

I purchased the Brill Razorcut 38 in February, (not from Amazon though), and I am thoroughly disappointed with the machine. It may be highly rated by some people but in my opinion it's an overpriced piece of garbage. When I received it the first thing I noticed is the hubcaps had fallen off. Granted this is simply a cosmetic feature and doesn't affect the operation of the machine. The next thing I noticed is that I had to spread the lower part of the handles to create tension when it's inserted in the machine otherwise the handles continually fell off. Would you call this poor engineering? And finally after two and half months of easy use one of the plastic wheels is starting to fall off.

Warrantee on the machine appears to be another issue. From everything I have been able to find the manufacturers warrantee appears to be valid only in the European Union, warrantee in the United States apparently are offered by the individual seller.

This is a machine sold at Mercedes-Benz prices and is of Yugo quality.

I purchased the Brill Razorcut 38 in February, (not from Amazon though), and I am thoroughly disappointed with the machine. It may be highly rated by some people but in my opinion it's an overpriced piece of garbage. When I received it the first thing I noticed is the hubcaps had fallen off. Granted this is simply a cosmetic feature and doesn't affect the operation of the machine. The next thing I noticed is that I had to spread the lower part of the handles to create tension when it's inserted in the machine otherwise the handles continually fell off. Would you call this poor engineering? And finally after two and half months of easy use one of the plastic wheels is starting to fall off.

Warrantee on the machine appears to be another issue. From everything I have been able to find the manufacturers warrantee appears to be valid only in the European Union, warrantee in the United States apparently are offered by the individual seller.

This is a machine sold at Mercedes-Benz prices and is of Yugo quality.
